Quick answer: To find the time between two times, subtract the start from the end. From 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM is 8 hours 30 minutes; minus a 30-minute break that is 8 hours, or 8.00 decimal hours. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift runs past midnight and the calculator adds 24 hours automatically.

How to convert minutes to decimal hours for payroll
Payroll systems usually need hours as a decimal. Divide the minutes by 60: 15 minutes = 0.25 h, 30 minutes = 0.5 h, 45 minutes = 0.75 h. So 7 hours 45 minutes is 7.75 hours. The calculator shows the decimal value for every result so you can multiply it directly by an hourly rate.

Calculating overnight shifts
A shift from 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours, not −16. When the end time is earlier than the start time, the tool assumes the shift ends the next day. For shifts longer than 24 hours, use the Add / subtract durations tab instead.

How do I calculate hours worked between two times?

How many hours is 9am to 5pm?
9 AM to 5 PM is 8 hours. With a 30-minute unpaid lunch break it is 7.5 hours.

Does it work for night shifts?
Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator treats it as the next day.

Divide the minutes by 60 and add to the hours: 45 / 60 = 0.75, so 7 h 45 min = 7.75 hours.
