Quick answer: A typing speed test measures how many words per minute (WPM) you can type correctly, where one word equals 5 characters. The average adult types around 35–40 WPM; most office, clerk and data-entry jobs ask for 30–45 WPM with at least 90–95% accuracy. Take a 1-minute test above to see your score instantly.
How to take the typing test
- Choose the language: English, Urdu or Arabic. Urdu and Arabic tests run right-to-left and accept any keyboard layout installed on your device.
- Pick the duration (30 seconds to 5 minutes) and the text type: easy words, full paragraphs, or numbers and symbols for data-entry practice.
- Click in the typing box and start typing. The timer begins with your first key press.
- Correct characters turn dark, mistakes are highlighted in red. Turn off Allow backspace to practise under strict exam rules.
- When the time ends, read your net WPM, accuracy and level, compare it with the pass target, and download a certificate image if you want to keep a record.
How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?
Typing tests use a standard word of 5 characters, including spaces and punctuation, so long and short words are scored fairly. This test reports:
- Gross WPM = (all characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
- Net WPM = (all characters typed ÷ 5 − uncorrected errors) ÷ minutes. This is the score most employers mean by “typing speed”.
- Accuracy = correct characters ÷ characters typed × 100
- CPM = correct characters per minute (some Urdu and government tests use this instead of WPM)
Example: 230 characters in 1 minute with 6 errors → (230 ÷ 5 − 6) ÷ 1 = 40 net WPMTyping speed chart: what is a good WPM?
| Net WPM | Level | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Below 20 | Beginner | Still looking at the keyboard; focus on accuracy and finger placement. |
| 20–34 | Average | Typical everyday computer user. |
| 35–49 | Good | Meets most clerk, receptionist and data-entry requirements. |
| 50–69 | Fast | Above most office job requirements. |
| 70+ | Professional | Suitable for typist, transcription and stenography work. |
Typing speed requirements for jobs
Requirements differ by employer, so always check the job advertisement. As a general guide:
| Role | Typical requirement |
|---|---|
| Office assistant, receptionist | 30–40 WPM |
| Data entry operator | 35–45 WPM, often with a numbers test |
| Clerk / junior clerk (government) | Around 30 WPM English; Urdu typing is tested separately for some posts |
| Typist, stenotypist, transcriptionist | 50–70+ WPM |
| Customer service and call centre | 35–50 WPM with high accuracy |
Use the Pass target option above to practise against the speed your job asks for. A pass needs both the target WPM and at least 90% accuracy, as most tests also set an accuracy limit.
Urdu and Arabic typing test tips
- Add the keyboard first. On Windows go to Settings → Time & language → Language & region and add Urdu or Arabic, then switch with Win+Space. On Android or iPhone, add the language in your keyboard settings.
- Any layout works. This test accepts Windows Urdu, phonetic Urdu and standard Arabic layouts, and treats the Arabic and Urdu forms of letters such as ی/ي and ک/ك as the same.
- Expect lower WPM. Urdu and Arabic words are written with fewer, joined letters, so a good Urdu speed is usually lower than the same typist’s English speed. Compare yourself in the same language.
- Practise the numbers and punctuation text if you are preparing for an office or court typing test, as forms and letters use dates, amounts and commas.
How to improve your typing speed
- Keep your fingers on the home row (ASDF and JKL;) and use all ten fingers.
- Look at the screen, not the keyboard, even if it feels slow at first.
- Aim for accuracy first; speed follows once mistakes drop below 5%.
- Practise 10–15 minutes every day rather than one long session a week.
- Retake the same test length weekly and track your best score in the history panel.
Is my typing data saved?
No. The test runs completely in your browser. What you type is never sent to our server. Your last 10 results and best scores are stored only in your own browser so you can track progress, and you can clear them by clearing your browser data. The certificate is a self-assessed practice result, not an official exam score.
