Percentages show up everywhere — a discount at checkout, a tip on a bill, a grade average, a raise on a payslip — and yet the formula that connects them is easy to blank on the moment you actually need it. There is really only one relationship to remember; every everyday percentage question is just a different arrangement of the same three numbers.
The one formula behind all of it
Every percentage problem relates three things: the part, the whole, and the percentage itself.
part ÷ whole × 100 = percentage
Rearrange that same equation depending on which number you are missing, and you can solve almost any real-world percentage question.
Working out a discount
A jacket is priced at 80 QAR with a 25% discount. To find out how much you save:
80 × 25 ÷ 100 = 20
You save 20, so the jacket costs 60. The general rule: price × discount% ÷ 100 = amount saved.
Working out a tip
A restaurant bill comes to 45, and you want to leave 15%.
45 × 15 ÷ 100 = 6.75
Same formula, different context: bill × tip% ÷ 100 = tip amount.
Working out a grade average
You scored 42 out of 50 on a test. To turn that into a percentage:
42 ÷ 50 × 100 = 84%
Here the part and whole are given, and you are solving for the percentage itself — the same formula, just rearranged.
Working out a percentage increase (like a raise)
A salary goes from 4,000 to 4,300. To find the percentage increase:
(4,300 − 4,000) ÷ 4,000 × 100 = 7.5%
This one has an extra step — find the difference first, then divide by the original amount. The same approach works in reverse for a percentage decrease.
The mistake most people make
The most common error is dividing by the wrong number — using the new value instead of the original one as the “whole.” For a discount, that is always the original price. For an increase or decrease, that is always the starting value, not the ending one. Getting that one detail wrong is what usually throws the answer off.
