The exchange rate quoted in the news is rarely the rate offered at an airport counter or bank. Knowing the difference saves real money.
Mid market rate versus what is offered
The mid market rate is the midpoint between buy and sell prices on the global currency market. Banks, airport kiosks, and card networks add a markup on top, sometimes 3 to 8 percent, which is where most currency losses happen.
For travelers
Check the Currency Converter before a trip to know the mid market rate, then compare it against what a bank or exchange counter actually offers. Withdrawing larger amounts less often usually beats many small withdrawals, since flat fees add up.
For freelancers paid internationally
International wire transfers and some payment platforms also apply a markup on top of the mid market rate in addition to a flat fee. Comparing the amount actually received against the mid market rate for that day reveals the real cost of the transfer.
